Honestly, I can’t get over how busy we are now that September is here and school is back in session. I’ve come to fully realize that the kids really do need us more as they get older – with all the shuffling from school to after school activiities, each day is jam packed. The days are chock full and seem to be at their busiest AFTER school lets out! I’m not sure how I was managing the work-family balance before this year. Things certainly are CRAZY!
My kids love the chance to swing by the McDonald’s drive-thru on a busy night. On our recent trip to Lake Placid, they begged for Happy Meals. Let’s face it, on a long seven hour car journey, the Happy Meal was the answer to our prayers. Everyone was happy.
Did you know that the Happy Meal is now just $2.99? McDonald’s is the perfect place to stop in for an affordable lunch or dinner break when you’re having a craving between all the crazy back-to-school madness! I just LOVE their french fries, but I’m excited to let you know about McDonald’s new Happy Meal offerings! Whether you’re rushing between ballet, soccer, or CCD, you can now choose between more wholesome options like Apple Slices and the new Go-GURT Low-Fat Strawberry Yogurt. Later this fall, you’ll even see Cuties clementines from Sun Pacific as a Happy Meal side too!
It’s always great to hear when a brand listens to its consumers and is committed to improving upon our nutrition and well-being. At 50 calories per serving of tube of yogurt, and with 25 percent less sugar than the leading kids’ yogurt*, Go-GURT Low-Fat Strawberry Yogurt also delivers one-quarter cup of low-fat dairy and is a good source of vitamin D and calcium.? We now have the choice to order both Go-GURT Low-Fat Strawberry Yogurt and apple slices as our sides in place of a kid-size fry.The addition of Go-GURT in kids’ meals provides another wholesome choice, joining Apple Slices, 1% low-fat white milk and fat-free chocolate milk and 100% apple juice beverage options. Although my boys will love these new choices in their Happy Meals, I know Emily will still still choose french fries – a girl after my own heart!
Last week I got to join Emily for lunch at school and bring her a special treat to celebrate her being “Star of the Week.” We had a lovely time together as I surprised her at school with a Happy Meal. She was delighted! Never before had I been invited in for lunch with her! This was such a fun way to make Emily feel special during one of her star moments!
Back-to-school can be pure crazy. With four kids, we really have to stay on top of things. Here are some of our favorite tips that we try really hard to do at the Stow house:
- Have the after school gear and snacks laid out and ready to go in the kitchen well before they get home from school. Some days, there are only a few minutes between getting off the bus and getting ready for soccer or dance. This way, there’s less commotion, chaos and stress.
- Try meal-planning on the weekend. If you can figure out what you’re having for dinner each night well in advance, this too, makes for much smoother sailing as a family. Get the kids involved and let them flip through cookbooks and recipes. Let them help with meal preparation too!
- Create a family organization station for school papers, lunch menus, important notices and to-do lists. Each child can have their own box or container for their papers. With a designated space for each child, kids will become more responsible, know where everything is and learn where to look first if they can’t find something.
What are some of your tips for making each day run smoothly at your house as the kids are back in school? Let us know in the comments!
In the meantime, we’re excited to offer one lucky reader the chance to win a $25 Arch Card to McDonald’s so you can try the new options in the Happy Meal with your family! Enjoy the #HappyBalance and good luck!
