The Stow Kids cannot wait for June 22nd. This is the day they can begin their Summer Learning Challenge with Brain Chase. Say what?
First, the kids received some treasures in the mail. Your kids will receive similar treasures at your doorstep throughout the 2015 summer challenge too! The surprises REALLY excited them. They had never seen or used a real, live compass before and they love to bring it everywhere we go. The motivation for summer learning is SO ALIVE and it’s only March people!
The typical summer learning I’ve witnessed as an educator and parent has involved a list of websites for math and a good old reading log. Am I the only one who finds this type of summer work a major battle? True story – it’s always a major battle in the Stow house. Aidan can’t stop talking about Brain Chase, however. “When can we start again? Who won last year? Is it okay if we do more than 20 minutes of work per day?” Seriously? Whose kid is he?
Brain Chase could be the answer.
Brain Chase is a global online treasure hunt for kids in grades 2-8. Since children are known to lose one to two months of learning over the summer months, Brain Chase has collaborated with Khan Academy and other online partners to put together a customized curriculum to help prevent learning loss for children ages 7-14. In its second year, this summer students will be hunting for the Sunstone of Cortes using clues from their online studies. There’s an actual real life treasure buried somewhere on Earth and one lucky Brain Chase winner will receive a $10,000 college scholarship fund for solving the puzzle. That one lucky winner will actually be flown to the location to DIG UP the stone! How cool is that? But what’s even cooler is the amount of learning that will be taking place in homes across America to avoid the summer slide. Sounds like everyone wins in my book!
