I can’t even begin to tell you how warm my heart was on Friday afternoon when Aidan idled off that yellow school bus with a chapter book in his hands.
“Mommy, I’m on page 64. I read it outside at school. It was too hot to play, so I read my new book instead.”
“Awesome, buddy! I’m so proud of you! Did you know that book is part of a series?”
“Yes. I’m gonna read all of them. They’re really funny.”
Little did he know that on Sunday afternoon he would be meeting the author of those very books, getting his autograph and checking out his new bookstore in the next town over. I love it when the stars align and magic happens.
The new bookstore belongs to Jeff Kinney, award winning author of the Wimpy Kid books. Did you know that his books have been on the New York Times bestseller list since his first book launch? He’s been on that list for more than 400 weeks! This guy has an amazing influence on young kids with his Wimpy Kid books and movies – you need to check his books out if you haven’t already.
An Unlikely Story Opens in Plainville, MA
Jeff Kinney’s new bookstore is now a focal point in downtown Plainville. The bookstore replaces what once was Falk’s Market, but Kinney did a great job keeping those old memories alive with vintage signs and displays throughout this unique bookstore. In fact, Kinney went out of his way to build his bookstore in the most environmentally friendly way he could. The store boasts reclaimed wood throughout, solar panels on the roof and recycled materials every which way you look. Inside you’ll find the bookstore, a cafe, a meeting room and studio. It is Kinney’s hope that An Unlikely Story becomes a community gathering place.
An Unlikely Story is located at 111 South Street in Plainville, MA at the corner of East Bacon and South Street. The store has an eclectic collection of books, which I’m sure is ever-changing with staff picks. It’s intimate and quaint, with gorgeous wood floors and exquisite lighting that will draw you right in. You’ll find flying books and broomsticks overhead and your whole family will fall in love with its indie feel.
You can grab a book and idle up to the cafe counter where you can get yourself breakfast or lunch and even grab a glass of wine or craft beer. Have they not thought of everything? Trust me, you need to plan a visit.
An Unlikely Story offers:
- an eclectic collection of books
- a small Wimpy Kid section
- Unique Gifts and Toys
- Healthy food
- Amazing Author visits
- Compimentary Gift Wrapping
- Serves Alcohol (after noontime)
- Big leather chairs to sink into with a good book
- Special events like wine tasting, yoga, jewelry workshops, game nights, etc. (check website for list of upcoming offerings)
- Free wi-fi
The Stow kids can’t wait to go back and dig into some good books when it’s a little less crowded. This place is brand-spanking new – just opened on May 30th!
Aidan finished his first Wimpy Kid book on Saturday morning, while dressed in his baseball uniform waiting for his game. He loved it so much that he asked if he could bring his book to Emily’s dance recital and reread it. How could I NOT get him a new book in the series at An UnLikely Story?
